I’m Sarah Johnston, a former radio journalist, broadcaster and sound archivist. For eight years until late 2020 I worked with the Radio New Zealand Sound Archives collection, at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.
In 2020 I nominated the sound recordings made by the New Zealand Mobile Units during World War II, for inscription in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Aotearoa Register. You can read more about the collection and why UNESCO decided it was worthy of inscription here.
In 2021 I was lucky enough to receive some funding to begin researching and writing about these audio taonga (treasures) and explaining why I believe they deserve to be more widely known – and heard – by all New Zealanders.
